Free School Meals Eligibility

Even if your school doesn’t offer free meals to all students, your child may still qualify.

  • Eligibility is based on your family’s income. Income limits for the 2025-26 school year can be found here.

  • You do not need to be a citizen to receive school meals. Receiving school meals does not make you a public charge.

  • Ask for an application at your child’s school office or find the application online. Use OSPI’s Washington School Meals Application Finder to find your school district’s online meal application.

Additional Benefits

  • Students who qualify for free school meals may be eligible to have other school fees waived, including field trip and athletic fees.

  • Students who are eligible and enrolled in free school meals will also be automatically enrolled in SUN Bucks, which provides extra money for food during the summer.

  • Your child’s school might offer other food resources like free afterschool snacks or meals, a school food pantry, or a “backpack program” where students can take home a bag of food each weekend. Ask the school office if any of these are available to you.
